One of the most common questions that I am asked is “What does the Erchonia laser do?”   The short answer is the Erchonia laser optimizes human performance, speeds up recovery, and restores neurological function!  If you want the long answer, keep reading! The word   “Erchonia” is from Greek and means “healing light.” LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification through the Stimulation of Emitted Radiation and to date, there are over 3,500 research studies showing the effectiveness of this safe therapy.

The three characteristics of any laser are coherence, wavelength, and power. These three characteristics can be manipulated for specific applications and is what differentiates a laser used for healing purposes (the Erchonia laser) from a laser used to cauterize tissue in surgery from an inexpensive laser pointer purchased from Wal-mart. The Erchonia laser (which obtained FDA approval in 2002) is called a “cold laser” because it stimulates biological processes and tissue regeneration and does not destroy or cauterize tissue like a “hot laser”.

The Erchonia Laser can decrease scar tissue formation, increase microcirculation, accelerate wound healing (if you are interested, ask to see the photographs at the front desk), stimulates immune system activity, helps cellular detoxification, decreases pain, improves range of motion, decreases arthritis, accelerates fracture repair and can also be used to stimulate acupuncture points.  Yes, it does sound like something that Dr. McCoy from Star Trek would use . . . except 260 years earlier!

How does it work?  The Erchonia laser penetrates the skin and causes a cascade of events at the cellular level. To understand this better, please allow me to explain a little bit about the cell. The cell is the building block of every muscle, tissue, and organ in the body. Each cell in the body is surrounded by a membrane which is described in the literature as a “fluid mosaic.” The more “fluid” this membrane is the higher the probability that substances like proteins, hormones, and neurotransmitters will be able to attach to the cell and do their function.  (The reason that trans fats are so detrimental to your health is that they make the cell membrane very rigid and stiff and unable to work properly.  Fish oil however, does just the opposite and actually promotes cell membrane fluidity and therefore increases the efficiency of the cell!)

The Erchonia laser starts the healing process by increasing the cell membrane fluidity.  This allows the proteins, hormones, and neurotransmitters that are so crucial to the maintenance of health to be more effectively utilized by the cell.  This promotes cellular health and stability which allows it to function better.

Deeper in the cell, there are organelles called mitochondria.  The mitochondria are referred to as the “powerhouses” of the cell because they produce energy.  The Erchonia laser activates replication of the mitochondrial DNA which allows the cell (and the body as a whole) to have more energy available for achieving and maintaining the health and wellness that we all desire!
